The CRA is Still on Strike. What Does this Mean for Small Business Owners and Entrepreneurs?

If you are a small business owner and entrepreneur running your own business, tax deadlines are coming up for you. As a business owner, we have no doubt that you are already juggling many hats when it comes to the operation and sustainability of your business. Even worse have been the struggles of the Pandemic and things like operating to scale – where business owners have had to be mindful to take extra precautions and be flexible.

The basic rundown of what’s happening

If you’re in that boat, we don’t blame you if you feel uncomfortable and uncertain about the current Canada Revenue Agency strike. For context, the CRA has been on strike since April 19 and unable to reach a resolution thus far. The impact? Over 35,000 government employees working under Canada Revenue Agency are not working right now in protest of current contract deals, the workers of which are represented by the Public Service Alliance of Canada–Union of Taxation Employees (PSAC-UTE)

You still need to file your taxes

Although the effects of this have included immensely delayed services through longer call time waits and longer processing of taxes, you still need to file your taxes. Our recommendation is that you get your receipts and balances organised earlier, and reach out to a tax professional or bookkeeper to help you file them. Right now, processing times are delayed up to two months (or 8 weeks). The faster you file, you might also be faster to receive your return.

How else does this strike affect me?

Expect higher delays with call times and slower responses from your agents at the CRA. It is extremely possible that your tax return will come in with a delay due to the lower volume of agents working at Canada Revenue Agency right now, so please be patient. Your tax deadline to file is June 15th, 2023. This does not change despite the strike.
